We caught up with Steve in anticipation of his return to Pow City. Steve's unique style of soul has been a massive influence to DJs and soul clubs across the land, and Pow City is no exception to the case. We're proud to call this humble gentleman our friend and are delighted he will be celebrating our fifth anniversary with us.

Where are you from?

Born in Huddersfield West Yorkshire, been living the last 30 years in Manchester. A bloke once called me “Half Manc half sheep”.

What / when was your first experience of soul music?

My first real experience of soul music going out was the 70s youth clubs and Starlight disco in Huddersfield.. My firsy Soul all nighter was around 1981 at Bradford Queens Hall.

How long have you been DJing?

Starting playing tunes back in 1981 in Huddersfield my home town. A little Sunday night back room soul event.

You've been promoting soul nights for decades, tell us a little about when you started out and what you've done.

With regards to promoting rare soul it all started around 1989 when I moved to Manchester, been promoting clubs ever since.. In 2004 I started my Soul Or Nothing club, looking to push the underplayed rare soul, deep funk, gospel and move onto co - promoting Different Strokes around 2012. Always looking for lesser known djs from Uk, Europe and beyond.

What LP is on your turntable at the moment (soul or otherwise)?

An album playing at the moment is an old fave that will never fade - Terry Callier 'What Color is love'

What three records never leave your box?

Aside from packing dancefloors, you’re known for your love of the downbeat, deeper, gritty side of soul. What three deep tracks never lose their sheen for you?
